Hello, I invite you on a trip. You can open a whole world of a far oriental country in the heart of Asia. Household objects, clothes, textile, decorations tell a story better than any guide! This is traditional Uzbekistan dress. Made in 1960's MATERIALS real natural silk atlas of the high quality CONDITION excellent SIZE length-38 in, chest-50 in, from one sleeve to another-54 in. Such design was very popular in 1960-80' in late soviet epouch. In Central Asian hot climite it is the best for summer because of its oily, light, cool tissue. Ikat is one of the most interesting part of Central Asian Applied Arts and the most prestigious and beautiful fabric. It is also known in Persian as 'abr' for 'cloud', in Turkic as 'ipekshahi', in Arabic as 'asab', in Hindi as 'patola'. Like a cloud Uzbek Ikats display a great variety of patterns, may be composed of several combinations of materials and may be woven in both simple and complex structures. The single features shared by all of these extraordinary textiles is the complex dyeing process which is undertaken before the individual elements are arranged upon the loom. All ikat cloths have either their warps, their wefts, or, in rare cases, both warps and wefts dyed only in selective areas and only before those threads have been placed before the loom. The process of preventing the dyes from penetrating the entire warp or weft is known as 'reserving' or 'resist dye' and this produces the essential characteristics of ikat cloth. At the points where the reserved undyed areas meet the dyed sections, carefully controlled amounts of color merge with one another, randomly creating subtle, slightly blurred patterns. This dyeing technique ensures that each abr (cloud) is unique, and it is this aesthetic quality which suggests an analogy with clouds. Thank you !!!

Suzani "Palyak" ORIGIN Tashkent, Uzbekistan CIRCA 1900' MATERIALS natural silk on cotton SIZE 108x99 inches In the 19th century Palyak, large size decorative embroidery, was the most important element of any bride’s dowry. In fact it was so essential that in cases when it was not available in a dowry and there was nothing to replace it with, it usually was borrowed from friends or relatives. Bride entered the house of her future husband under the protective cover of palyak, because it was said to possess the powers of a good luck charm or protective talisman. Both newly-weds were covered with it throughout the wedding ritual while it performed the role of "gushanga"- mantle. It was then also used as a bedspread for their marital bed. In the later period of time palyaks became mostly wall-mounted household decorations. Translated literally as “heavenly dome”, palyak was decorated with ornaments that symbolized celestial bodies: full phase moon (called Moon in Uzbek), stars (yulduz), etc. The motives of this embroidery was supposed to keep the newly-weds safe from evil eyes and vile spirits during the most perilous period of their life, the so called chillya , the forty-days after child birth, circumcision, wedding and death. The typical size of Palyak was about 98in - 118 in, with minor deviations in some cases. Embroidery of one piece of this kind usually required more than 5 km of silk thread, due to the fact that the stitches were exclusively using couching technique with twisted yarn. The main colors used were black, yellow, dark Bordeaux, raspberry pink and sometimes limited presence of violet, the latter completely absent on older embroideries. Bordeaux served as the main background color. The most frequently present ornament on palyaks are the ornamented circles, the so called oy (standing for the full moon). In the old days those were often embroidered by red (the silk was dyed with ruyan natural dye that gave it rich shiny gloss, truly pleasing the eye). Those circles were usually set off by an ornamented ring crafted in two colors – blackish dark cherry and yellow or sky blue and yellow. The ring resembled a band composed of alternating zigzags of those colors embroidered with ornament. The number of oy (lunar medallions) on Tashkent embroideries varied according to old men’s recollections from forty on the oldest pieces to twenty on newer versions. In the collection of the national fine arts museum in Tashkent there were exhibits with sixteen and twelve oy, the latter composed as four circles in three rows. Some Tashkent residents still own palyaks with six or more often four large oy. Such palyaks with six moons and four moons were in wide circulation in the 1880-1890s. Wedding rituals of course were evolving from the beginning of time. In Uzbekistan as in any other country in the world these traditional ceremonies were very eloquent, filled with deep symbolism. Embroidery always played an important integral part in any wedding. It never was limited in its functions to being purely a background drop or a numb decoration. Instead it acted as an equally significant player in this complex staged event, performed its well-defined meaningful role. The bride was led into her future husband’s house while a large piece of embroidery, palyak, was carried over her ceremonially lowered head in order to protect her from evil spirits, to keep her safe from malefic or bad eye. She remained covered throughout the “cleansing” procedure sitting in front of a bonfire until the moment came for the groom to take her away as part of a steal-away ritual and lead her unto the sheltering curtains. After that the palyak was also hanged onto curtains, so it would serve as a safeguard for both newlyweds. This is the story of such interesting embroidery. Just look at this… Amaze with an impression of the time that stands still, it seems that the past in one moment has interflown in present. Its pattern preserves ancient legends and its stitching is filled with history. Free delivery by Fedex

Uzbek Chapan, made of handmade silk-cotton striped fabric 'becasan'. Organic material. Lined with natural cotton. Age: 50 years. Size: length-42 in, chest-49 in, from one sleeve to another-60 in. Very good vintage condition. Traditional garment for Uzbeks and Tajiks more than 200 years. Unisex. The outer layer is the strong and mild silk with a smooth and iridescent surface. Striped fabrics such as the "abr" (ikat) pattern created by means of a coloured thread base were still wide-spread, and the warpers' art reached its peack during the early 20th century. The most attractive thing in Uzbek striped fabrics is the beauty of their colour and the pure dyes which are applied in delicate combinations. The colouring is driven to the utmost stress, either resorting to shatp contrasts or delicate harmony. In past times, striped fabrics were very popular in all regions of Central Asia. Striped robe is original symbol of all Uzbek men. Those fabrics were made a lot and with different patterns in Fergana. Big attention was paid to colours and colour combinations and to the width of strips. Most popular silk and half-silk bekasabs were those with colour combinations of yellow, pink and violet colours of the same width and in soft non-contrast shades. People of Fergana, Margilan and Kokand preferred yellow colour with combinations of violet and pink. Namangan robes were marked with combinations of green with red and blue. Still, despite of verities of Fergana colours, robes were made in strict order. Latter was concentrated in bekasabs with green and blue shades, known as moch rang. Chapans, made of bekasab was popular all over Uzbekistan. First Chapans were made for boys at sannattoy, i.e. circumcision, later for kuev toon-wedding. After wedding it was worn in the house as a daily cloth.

Handmade Robe made of hand crafted natural cotton ikat "Adras". Natural cotton 100%. Measurements: length-49 in (124.4 cm), chest-38 in (96.5 cm), width of shoulders-15.5 in (39.3 cm), sleeve length-17.5 in (44.4 cm). Ikat-weaving technique emerged in different parts of the world, often independently. India and Indonesia have their own long traditions of ikat making, however, it is ikat fabrics from Uzbekistan which have become a late hit in fashion and interior design industries for their large and bold patterns, and for mixing unimaginable ikat colors you would originally think would not work together. Ikat fabrics are often used as a chic upholstery fabric, curtains, pillow covers, throws and quilts. Ikat from Uzbekistan, defined as abrabandi, meaning “bound cloud”, which is the most captivating, using a resist dye process whereby the warp yarns (vertical threads) are bound and dyed by hand before being woven with the weft yarns (horizontal threads). It is a very ancient way of creating designs in fabric by resist-dyeing the threads before the fabric is woven. Uzbekistan silk ikat fabrics have their own names: shoi, khan-atlas, atlas, podshokhi. These types of fabrics are produced from pure silk. The fabrics made of cotton weft and silk warp are called adras, bekasab, pasma, banoras. Patterns are named after shapes they resemble. Traditionally, the most wide-spread ornaments “tumorcha” – amulet, “tarok” – comb, “gadjak” – jewelry, “bodom” – almond, “darakht” – tree, “anor” – pomegranate, “Oy” – the Moon, “shokh” – horn, “chirog” – lampad, “ilon izi” – snake trail, “kapalak” – butterfly, “chayon” – scorpion, and etc. Due to the special properties, these versatile fabrics keeps cool in the summer and heat in the winter.
