The General is an American steam locomotive manufactured in 1855 by Rogers, Ketchum & Grosvenor. During the Civil War, it gained notoriety after an incident that occurred on April 12, 1862, known as the Great Locomotive Race. It is currently housed at the Southern Civil War and Locomotive Museum in Kennesaw, Georgia, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The locomotive was built in December 1855 at the Rogers, Ketchum & Grosvenor plant in Paterson (New Jersey) and had serial number 631. The locomotive was purchased for $8,850 by the Western and Atlantic Railroad in Georgia, which gave it the name “General.” Since 1856, the locomotive began serving passenger and freight trains.
