Before the war, tests of the SSH-40 helmet were carried out at the Shchurovsky test site near Moscow. During the war, it was produced by the Krasny Oktyabr metallurgical plant and the Lysva metallurgical plant. Tests of the finished product included selective tests of the helmet's armor resistance in a shooting range by firing a 7.62-mm rifle from the 1891/30 model. The firing distance was 25 meters. On helmets made since 1942, a new type of comforter was installed, which consisted of three petals, made of artificial leather. Each of the petals was attached to the surface of the helmet with two rivets. In the upper part, the petals of the comforter were fastened with a cord. The chin strap on this helmet was made of khaki fabric or leather. The helmet was painted olive or khaki, sometimes a five-pointed star was depicted on the front of the helmet. On the inside of the helmet, in the back of the head, an original stamp was affixed. The steel helmet was made in three sizes: № 1, 2, 3 (see the stamp).
