Suzani, hand embroidery ORIGIN Samarkand CIRCA middle of the 20th century MATERIALS raw silk on cotton, all dyes are natural CONDITION excellent SIZE 59 x 61 inches Offered here is very decorative Suzani from legendary Samarkand, a heart of The Ancient Silk Road. It is a large-scale laconic pattern. The main motif here is large rosette framed by the stylized solid black leafy stalk. Medallion is the realistic depiction of the sun's disk is undoubtedly connected with the old popular rituals and beliefs. The sun is a favourite motif of all Central Asia embroidery. It passes through the history of the art, gradually losing its religious significance. In our days it appears in the form of a tulip named yak lola. The motif so widely used by Uzbeks, Tajiks, Kirghizs and even Turkmen embroideresses and other handicraftsmen is of a very old origin. It was traced back to the 7-8th century Sogdian art. Huge decorative effect plus interesting design makes this piece of silk hand embroidery is real masterpiece, which has been made with skill and love.
