The situation changed in 1747 when chemist Valerius discovered that the gem had nothing in common with topaz. He also classified the mineral as a separate species and gave it a name - citrine. At its core, citrine is an ordinary quartz and almost a "brother" to amethyst. Its chemical formula looks simple enough - SiO2. What gives the gem its characteristic yellowish tint? Low concentration of iron, lithium, aluminum and hydrogen. The mass of these impurities is so small that the physical properties of the stone cannot be distinguished from the description of quartz.
