During prayer, they can be put forward and used to count the prayers, they can also be pulled back into the paws and they will not be visible. Lestovka is most often used by Old Believers but is still used by many Orthodox, as it is very convenient for prayer. Lestovka symbolizes the ladder of spiritual rebirth from earth to heaven.
