The novel was written in 1928. The publication of the novel caused a big scandal associated with numerous frank descriptions of love scenes, and for some time the novel was banned in different countries. The novel describes a classic love triangle: a beautiful young wife, an invalid husband, and a surly, somewhat spiteful forester looking after the estate. The novel also touches on social issues (here the man, lady and forester come from different classes) and explicit aspects (detailed descriptions of the awakening of attraction to the forester in Constance and their love scenes). The novel was perceived by most of Lawrence's contemporaries as a challenge to society and in 1928 was banned in the UK, and the finished edition was confiscated and destroyed.
