At the bottom of the medal is an image of a double-headed eagle with the crown of the Russian Empire.
This commemorative medal was dedicated to the opening of the monument in Veliky Novgorod "The Millennium of Russia" in 1862. The foundation of this monument was laid to a depth of 10 meters. They looked like a cylindrical wall, which expanded in the lower part in diameter, which had about four meters and was hollow inside.
A granite boulder with a recess was laid in the foundation of the monument. In this recess was placed a box, made of bronze, which had an inscription about the purpose of this monument and the time of its laying. Also, a medal from the time of Emperor Alexander II was invested in it, in addition, silver and gold coins of the 1881 issue were placed there.
A granite pedestal was placed on the foundation itself, which gradually narrowed towards the top. Inside, this pedestal was also hollow and was covered with a vault. From the outside, the pedestal was lined with polished Serdobol granite, which was mined on Lake Ladoga in quarries on the northern shore.
The bronze details of the monument were cast at the Nichols and Plink factory in St. Petersburg. The grand opening of the monument took place on September 8, 1862 in the presence of the reigning Emperor Alexander II. Also in Novgorod itself, in connection with the upcoming celebrations for the opening of the monument, all the pavements were re-paved and many city buildings were repaired. A solemn parade was organized in the city, and the celebrations lasted for three days.
The august family, close relatives of the emperor, members of his retinue arrived in Novgorod to celebrate this event. About 12,000 soldiers and officers and many ordinary spectators also took part in the parade. During the celebrations, the city's population doubled. The celebrations included a religious procession to the main temple of Novgorod - St. Sophia Cathedral. A liturgy was held in all the churches of the Novgorod Kremlin and in the Znamensky Cathedral, as well as the transfer of the holy relics into a silver reliquary from a wooden one that had fallen into disrepair.
The next day, September 7, the emperor received a delegation from local nobles, and reviewed the troops preparing for the parade, and together with his wife, surrounded by a retinue, under the identical bell ringing, went to the liturgy in St. Sophia Cathedral.
After the liturgy, the procession moved from the temple to the monument, where the military units that participated in the parade were already stationed, and the audience was accommodated on platforms specially built for the celebrations. Further, the cover was removed from the monument, and then a salute was made from 62 guns. A solemn parade began, ending with a festive dinner.
The third day of celebrations coincided with another significant date for the royal family, the birthday of the emperor's brother, Grand Duke Constantine. At the end of the prayer service in the church, the peasant deputation presented the emperor with bread and salt on a wooden platter. further, Alexander II visited the orphanage and the gymnasium, followed by a gala dinner. And in the evening there was a ball.
The medal was minted with a diameter of 35 mm and a thickness of 3.3 mm. The obverse of this commemorative medal depicts the Millennium of Russia monument erected in Veliky Novgorod. On the reverse side of the medal in its center is a medallion, where there is a profile image of Prince Rurik and Tsar Alexander II. At the bottom of the medal is an image of a double-headed eagle with the crown of the Russian Empire.
Medallion and monetary art began to develop in the first quarter of the 18th century in Russia very quickly and soon reached a very high level, both in terms of art and in terms of production. The influence of Western European medal art on Russia at the beginning of the 18th century. led to the fact that the empire began minting commemorative medals. Such medals were made in memory of various outstanding events, mainly battles or anniversaries. And we must pay tribute to the Russian masters, they did this with extraordinary accuracy.
At that time, commemorative medals served as the most important means of demonstrating the power of the state, in addition, they served to some extent as means of "mass information". Usually they were handed over during festive ceremonies, they were sent as memorable gifts or awards to foreign influential officials. The commemorative medal "Millennium of Russia" was minted in 1862 in honor of the opening of the monument "Millennium of Russia" in Novgorod."
