Hello, I invite you on a trip. You can open a whole world of a far oriental country in the heart of Asia. Household objects, clothes, textile, decorations tell a story better than any guide! This is traditional Uzbekistan dress. Made in 1960's MATERIALS real natural silk atlas of the high quality CONDITION excellent SIZE length-40 in, chest-50 in, from one sleeve to another-56 in. Such design was very popular in 1960-80' in late soviet epouch. In Central Asian hot climite it is the best for summer because of its oily, light, cool tissue. Ikat is one of the most interesting part of Central Asian Applied Arts and the most prestigious and beautiful fabric. It is also known in Persian as 'abr' for 'cloud', in Turkic as 'ipekshahi', in Arabic as 'asab', in Hindi as 'patola'. Like a cloud Uzbek Ikats display a great variety of patterns, may be composed of several combinations of materials and may be woven in both simple and complex structures. The single features shared by all of these extraordinary textiles is the complex dyeing process which is undertaken before the individual elements are arranged upon the loom. All ikat cloths have either their warps, their wefts, or, in rare cases, both warps and wefts dyed only in selective areas and only before those threads have been placed before the loom. The process of preventing the dyes from penetrating the entire warp or weft is known as 'reserving' or 'resist dye' and this produces the essential characteristics of ikat cloth. At the points where the reserved undyed areas meet the dyed sections, carefully controlled amounts of color merge with one another, randomly creating subtle, slightly blurred patterns. This dyeing technique ensures that each abr (cloud) is unique, and it is this aesthetic quality which suggests an analogy with clouds. Thank you !!!

Offered here is beautiful and very dramatic Suzani from Tashkent. High quality collection museum textile. More than 100 years old. It is a piece of full silk handmade embroidery. Base is cotton fabric. Tashkent Suzani is very unique. The Tashkent Suzani used simplicity and geometric designs to create their visual effects. Often this simplicity in design created a more overwhelming effect than the detailed work of the neighbors regions. The most important element of the Tashkent Suzanis is the motif, particularly the Central Ornament that represented the moon or the Sun. In almost all Tashkent suzanis, one sees the large overwhelming round shapes. This type of suzani is named Oy Palyak, it means Lunar Firmament. Some have come to the conclusion that while most Uzbek Suzani's motifs were expressing prosperity by using flowers and vegetation the natural order of fertility, Tashkent pieces mainly gave a tribute to the Sun or Moon as Central base of fertility. The whole surface of this suzani is covered with 100% silk handmade embroidery. This is a large roundel in the centre of the field. Around this very large central roundel are four slightly smaller medallions. The total effect is overwhelming: very few examples of this type have the same dense complexity of palette and pattern and design. It is a work of great labor, patience and skill. Excellent stitches are used here. There was a legend about the creation of Palyak suzani in Uzbekistan . Many years ago there was a magic herb called "Saxifrage" in the high mountains. It had a terrific power that could destroy even an iron sword. Saxifrage was hidden from human's eye in the high mountain valleys. Everybody wanted to know the way to find and gain its power. It is supposed that this is a map depicted on each Palyak. Palyak was a creation of Turkic craftswomen. Each woman passed the story of her husband about the Saxifrage in her needle-work. The Palyak map was passed down from generation to generation and it was hung above the couch in a bedchamber and only members of a family could see it. The mountain with Saxifrage was guarded by two snakes (that is why roundels of palyaks are surrounded with two lines). And only the bravest and strongest man could get that magic grass. That man who owned the flower of the grass could overcome any obstacles and troubles. This grass is also believed to have wonderful power in the present days. One of the reasons of it is that the decoction and tinctures prepared from it have a subversive power indeed. Nowadays, legends and stories about Saxifrage are forgotten and palyaks are embroidered with other reasons. But you may still meet old women in the villages situated in the high mountains, who will never let you in the room with a Palyak is hung, as they are afraid to discover the secret of their husbands and fathers. Circa: first part of the 20th century. Stitch: couching. Size: 95 x 116 inches Condition: excellent. Free delivery by Fedex

Suzani "Palyak" ORIGIN Tashkent, Uzbekistan CIRCA 1900' MATERIALS natural silk on cotton SIZE 108x99 inches In the 19th century Palyak, large size decorative embroidery, was the most important element of any bride’s dowry. In fact it was so essential that in cases when it was not available in a dowry and there was nothing to replace it with, it usually was borrowed from friends or relatives. Bride entered the house of her future husband under the protective cover of palyak, because it was said to possess the powers of a good luck charm or protective talisman. Both newly-weds were covered with it throughout the wedding ritual while it performed the role of "gushanga"- mantle. It was then also used as a bedspread for their marital bed. In the later period of time palyaks became mostly wall-mounted household decorations. Translated literally as “heavenly dome”, palyak was decorated with ornaments that symbolized celestial bodies: full phase moon (called Moon in Uzbek), stars (yulduz), etc. The motives of this embroidery was supposed to keep the newly-weds safe from evil eyes and vile spirits during the most perilous period of their life, the so called chillya , the forty-days after child birth, circumcision, wedding and death. The typical size of Palyak was about 98in - 118 in, with minor deviations in some cases. Embroidery of one piece of this kind usually required more than 5 km of silk thread, due to the fact that the stitches were exclusively using couching technique with twisted yarn. The main colors used were black, yellow, dark Bordeaux, raspberry pink and sometimes limited presence of violet, the latter completely absent on older embroideries. Bordeaux served as the main background color. The most frequently present ornament on palyaks are the ornamented circles, the so called oy (standing for the full moon). In the old days those were often embroidered by red (the silk was dyed with ruyan natural dye that gave it rich shiny gloss, truly pleasing the eye). Those circles were usually set off by an ornamented ring crafted in two colors – blackish dark cherry and yellow or sky blue and yellow. The ring resembled a band composed of alternating zigzags of those colors embroidered with ornament. The number of oy (lunar medallions) on Tashkent embroideries varied according to old men’s recollections from forty on the oldest pieces to twenty on newer versions. In the collection of the national fine arts museum in Tashkent there were exhibits with sixteen and twelve oy, the latter composed as four circles in three rows. Some Tashkent residents still own palyaks with six or more often four large oy. Such palyaks with six moons and four moons were in wide circulation in the 1880-1890s. Wedding rituals of course were evolving from the beginning of time. In Uzbekistan as in any other country in the world these traditional ceremonies were very eloquent, filled with deep symbolism. Embroidery always played an important integral part in any wedding. It never was limited in its functions to being purely a background drop or a numb decoration. Instead it acted as an equally significant player in this complex staged event, performed its well-defined meaningful role. The bride was led into her future husband’s house while a large piece of embroidery, palyak, was carried over her ceremonially lowered head in order to protect her from evil spirits, to keep her safe from malefic or bad eye. She remained covered throughout the “cleansing” procedure sitting in front of a bonfire until the moment came for the groom to take her away as part of a steal-away ritual and lead her unto the sheltering curtains. After that the palyak was also hanged onto curtains, so it would serve as a safeguard for both newlyweds. This is the story of such interesting embroidery. Just look at this… Amaze with an impression of the time that stands still, it seems that the past in one moment has interflown in present. Its pattern preserves ancient legends and its stitching is filled with history. Free delivery by Fedex

Suzani, hand embroidery ORIGIN Bukhara MATERIALS organic silk dyed naturally on hand loomed, very smooth and mild; colors will not run CONDITION excellent. New. Never used LARGE SIZE 83- 74 in (211-188 cm). The emroidery of Bukhara is among the most interesting in Central Asia. Works of art of this kind stand out and create a school of popular applied art - a school which all creators of things of beauty have striven to complete with and which should be an example for them in future. Offered here is Bukhara Suzani, fully silk hand-embroidered with very accurate stitches. This hand-embroidery needs tremendous energy and very long time to make! The embroidery made with the tambour technique - "yurma". It is the most difficult, complex and unique kind of hand-embroidery, needed a tambour-frame and a special device called "bigiz" or "daraush" - a hook. Usually such chain-stitch was used only for making the outlines of patterns, because of needed too much time to make. Such technique could be used by limited amount of embroideresses. All stitches and ornaments look absolutely perfect. The chain-stitch is used to create ornamental designs across the entire surface of the article. The chain-stitch moves in directions that either follow the shapes of the design or divide it into individual sections, varying and diversifying the design with delicate internal ornamentation, imparting a lively interplay or light to the silk, and causing each color to modulate into two or three different yet perfectly harmonious shades. The chain-stitch winds around the outlines of the design, then moves gradually to the inside until the entire design (from outside edge to very middle) is filled with embroidery stitches. The transitions of light in the silk give the embroidery a beautiful texture, which can be comparable with the light shining on the jewels. The luxurious composition consists of the central field and the border. The main motif here is unusual floral net. The plant stems and shrubs, brittle and tender, with numerous little flowers, buds and leaves, wind so closely and freely round the main ornamental patterns, that looking at this picture you involuntarily believe in its reality, and almost expect to hear the singing of birds and smell the aroma of live flowers. The embroidery with the very good color combination produces a very relaxing, rejoicing effect on eyes. It is full of positive energy. Thank you !!!

Traditionally this embroidery work began at the birth of a daughter and continued, with the help of family and friends, until the bride's dowry was complete. The patterns of Suzanis are an expression of women's mood and fantasies; and not only that...Most of all, Suzanis are the last exponents of an age-old tradition which draw our attention by its mystery and beauty.
