The Softener of Evil Hearts icon is also called the Prophecy of Simon (or Simons Prophecy) since St Symeon said to Mary, upon the presentation of Our Lord in the temple:

"Behold, this child is set for the falling and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sin which shall be spoken against. Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed."

The Theotokos is depicted in this icon with her heart pierced by seven swords; a symbolic number possibly indicating the the fullness and boundless sorrow, pain and "sickness of heart" that would have been experienced by the Mother of God at His crucifixion.[note 2] Three of the swords enter her heart from the left, three swords enter from the right and one sword from underneath. This icon is very similar to the Seven Swords icon and they differ only in the arrangement of the swords.

On the Mother of God icon “Seven Arrows” the most Holy Mother of God is symbolically as if pierced with seven arrows. That is the image of the sorrow of Mother who saw Her Son’s suffering. Just as the Christ’s body was pierced with nails and lance, the soul of the Most-Pure Mother of Him was struck by the “weapon” of grief and profound pain. By the teaching of the Orthodox Church the Lord has been crucified for the sins of the mankind, and during the Liturgy is being crucified again and again for new sins of recent people. Therefore the seven arrows also symbolize seven mortal human sins bringing new sorrows to the Mother of God.

The most Holy Mother of God in Her wonder making icon “Seven Arrows” is venerated as a peacemaker quieting hostility; protector from malicious intent. The icon is invoked for stopping internecine feud as well as for overcoming wicked thoughts and ill feelings of one’s own heart. Everyone praying to this icon feel mental suffering as well as corporeal ones to be alleviated when a heart is softened. And if one prays for one’s enemies before this image hostile feelings give way to mercy, mordant hatred abating.
