I described a number of different techniques of wet weaving in my previous blog, but the most popular of all would be Wet Felting! Wet felting? Isn’t that something that happens when your pet sheep gets caught out in the rain? Let’s take a closer look at wet felting and see where the design and creativity of the artists working with this fabric takes us.
Artists who create using wet felting techniques will tell you that, as with any other work of art, you need to have the necessary tools, materials and space to bring your project to life. Wet felting is no different; artists need merino wool tufts, tools and basic felt making equipment. The artists first need to learn how to separate a length of wool tufts and how to pull tufts of fibers, and then blend the wool. Some of more important steps in this process include laying down the tufts of wool, using soapy water to wet the material, netting the fibers over and wet down, and rubbing and lifting the net.
Nothing symbolizes autumn more than the stunning colors of the leaves on the trees! The colors of autumn, as well as the nip in the air and the approaching holiday season, bring out the artist in many of us and help us to create beautiful pieces such as fruit bowls, wrapping scarves or other items designed to warm our hearts and souls. Autumn is also the time of year when wool takes a big step forward and the wet felting technique helps bring wool to life in various different forms. There are so many places to start, but since we are talking about Fall and the change of seasons, why not start with warm, cozy and comfortable slippers?
So many wool tufts and color selections!
If you love textiles and fibers as much as I do, then you would be amazed by the beauty of felt designs. Artists around the world found that stitching on felt helps create beautiful textures, and the combination of hand and free machine embroidery with handmade felt can lead to a number of artistic creations such as new wall art, or a simple hat, or berets, or countless of other items. For example, wool tufts are so soft and cozy that you’ll not only want them on your feet, but on your head or your walls!
Start from the top or the bottom and keep yourself warm.
As the days get shorter and the nights get longer, and colder, the color palette and desired products of winter appear. We start looking for warm covers for our hands, sweaters for our bodies, and purses to show off in the frosty surroundings. The colors of winter such as silver, lavender, and gentle blue emerge, plus a little bit of fiery red to keep calm.
