Montblanc Alexander von Humboldt Patron of the Art Series Limited Edition 4810 Fountain Pen Medium
To the present day, Alexander von Humboldt is regarded as the most prominent German naturalist and explorer and an influential patron of the arts and culture. Humboldt embarked on many years of travel, exploring the countries and cultures of South and Central America before returning to his homeland, where he made his name as a philanthropist: he wrote letters of recommendation on behalf of contemporary artists such as Berlioz and Mendelssohn Bartholdy, which were instrumental in promoting their careers, and in 1842, he established the "Civilian" or "Peace Class" of the "Pour le Mérite" military order, which is still awarded for special services in science and the fine arts, even today.
The cap and barrel of the Alexander von Humboldt Limited Edition are fashioned from black grenadilla hardwood. Both the ornate inlaid work and the 925 sterling silver clip and fittings are an allusion to the traditional crafts of the native Indio population, whose culture Humboldt studied during his expedition to South America. The platinum-plated 18k gold nib is finely engraved with a sextant - one of the instruments that helped Humboldt to rediscover and measure the world.
In the 4810 edition the spine and corpus are made of black grenadille, a luxurious hardwood from the southern hemisphere.
The inlay, clip and trim are reproduced in 925 sterling silver bringing to mind the art of the native indians whose culture Humboldt studied on his South American expedition.
The 18K sold gold Platinum plated nib bears a fine engraving of a sextant, one of Humboldt's favourite instruments which aided his research and surveying around the world on his voyages of discovery.
